Marketing is the means by which businesses or organizations inform people of their products and services with an aim towards convincing customers to purchase them. There are several different approaches a marketer might take.
One of the most popular approaches, called the “marketing orientation,” attempts to identify the customer’s needs and desires and then tries to associate a product, service, or brand with those needs and desires. An example of this would be associating a product with luxury in attempt to convince customers that if they buy that product, their life will be more luxurious.
Another marketing approach is called the “product orientation.” This involves the marketer highlighting the quality of their products and services. This marketing strategy assumes that customers are interested in quality, which may not always be the case. There are many other approaches, and often approaches are combined. Marketers are always interested in trying to come up with new ways to convince people to buy products and services.
With the advent of computers and the internet, email marketing has emerged. This involves marketers getting a hold of email mailing lists and using them to send out solicitations. This is a new spin on direct mailing campaigns which relied on snail mail. Often times, companies will outsource their email marketing to white label email marketing companies. These companies specialize in providing email marketing solutions for various companies who might not have the resources or expertise to do it themselves. Only time will tell what the next marketing innovation will be.
